"Hooked" was a magazine created in the course "Visual Communication" at Jönköping University. The magazine was created as a group effort concerning the topic of addictions, from drug addictions to hoarding. Two spreads + the cover art were designed and created by me.
Presented here is the cover art designed by me. We had initially decided for a darker theme, as the topic of the magazine was quite serious. I also knew i wanted to include a fishing hook somehow.
The image of the girl was a stock image that i photoshopped adding a threshold adjustment along with some other adjustments to isolate the colors, etc. I managed to include the hook in the title of the magazine which then recieved an outer glow, that was also manipulated by the threshold effect adding the "fuzzy" outline to it all.
A barcode and table of contents was also added, giving the frontpage more of a serious impression.
The image was deliberately chosen. Both as a play on words with "hooked", but also representing the feeling of drowning or being trapped in an addiction.
Hoarding
The spread below was my first "informative" spread in the magazine concerning the topic of hoarding. I wanted to create a sense of disorder in the design to fit with the theme it presents. That's what motivated the mixing of different character styles in the title, as well as the layout that follows where pictures are seemingly interrupting the running text, yet in an orderly fasion.
Plastic Surgery
My next topic was that of Plastic Surgery addiction. With this design i wanted to create a feeling of uneasiness in the reader, entertaining the idea of wanting to flee your own body, or change it. The title was overlined with the syringe inflating the P while the running text is "cut up" and presented by the surgeon. A meaty texture along with some shadows was added behind the text making the spread more interesting to look at.
